Lebogang Hashatse joined Mandela University in February 2015 as the Senior Director: Communications & Stakeholder Liaison and was appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations in 2019. 

Prior to this, he was the Director of Communications and Marketing at Rhodes University for six years. Before that, he held senior management positions in the corporate and parastatal environment, including Nedcor (Nedbank holding company), MultiChoice and Eskom. He also founded and headed Mataleng Consultancy, which consulted on strategic issues, stakeholder perception and media image management for companies and countries.

At Mandela University he has developed and implemented stakeholder engagement and communication strategies and partnerships that contribute to the building of the reputation and national profile of the university as the innovative, 21st century academic institution it is; leading South Africa and the continent in key fields, such as ocean sciences and the blue economy.

In 2017 he led the launch of the renaming of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) to Nelson Mandela University, and the development and implementation of the new identify and brand. In the same year he led the project to launch of the University’s dedicated and South Africa’s only Ocean Sciences Campus.

Mr Hashatse holds a Master’s in Media Studies from Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia; a BA Honours in Media Studies, Politics and Industrial Sociology from Rhodes University and a Bachelor of Journalism and Media Studies from Rhodes University.
